Job Description

The Produce Buyer/Commodity Head is the strategic and operational lead for a designated produce category, overseeing end-to-end supply chain management including sourcing, inventory, pricing, and profitability. This individual will act as the primary point of contact for all internal and external stakeholders related to the category and will be accountable for the business unit’s profit and loss performance.

Key Responsibilities:

Sourcing & Vendor Management:

• Develop and maintain strong relationships with domestic and international growers and suppliers.
• Lead vendor negotiations, onboarding, and contract management.
• Oversee regional and global grower base and supply planning to ensure consistent and quality product availability.
• Ensure compliance with product specifications, labeling standards (UPC/PLU/Bilingual), and food safety requirements.

Demand Planning & Logistics:

• Forecast demand and direct incoming loads to appropriate markets (e.g., Eastern/Western Canada, USA, International).
• Monitor product flow, routing, and alignment with sales and operational goals.
• Manage category costing to meet profitability targets.

Inventory & Quality Control:

• Maintain optimal inventory levels through effective FIFO practices and forecasting.
• Manage repackaging and regrading operations, including associated packaging requirements.
• Oversee programs related to product returns, waste, donations, and alternative market channels.
• Ensure accurate inventory records and coordinate adjustments with the inventory team.

Claims & Quality Assurance:

• Review Quality Control reports and address issues promptly.
• Manage claims processing with an emphasis on timeliness and resolution.

Sales & Pricing Strategy:

• Set and adjust pricing strategies to optimize margins and competitiveness.
• Develop promotional plans, including ad placements and discount strategies.
• Identify and execute growth opportunities in collaboration with the sales team.

Administrative & Financial Oversight:

• Review and approve vendor invoices to ensure timely payment.
• Support financial reporting and forecasting for the category.

Experience & Qualifications:

• Minimum of 5 years of experience in a similar role, with a proven track record in goods.
• Produce procurement experience is a must-have.
• Must be fully fluent in English, with exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal.
